Species: Otodus (formerly Carcharocles) Megalodon. Age: Miocene, 23-5.3 mya. A 4.87 inch Fossil Megalodon Tooth (Carcharocles megalodon) from South Carolina. For those unfamiliar, Carcharocles/Otodus megalodon is an extinct species of shark, and was in fact the largest species of shark to ever live, with adult size estimates ranging from 50-65 feet in length.

Megalodon lived between about 23 and 2.6 million years ago and could be found in oceans worldwide. They likely preyed upon sizeable aquatic animals, such as whales and sea turtles.
